OUR HISTORY

FROM 1981 TO TODAY | ABOUT COOKIN' ON KAMPESKA

On the shores of one of South Dakota’s most beloved lakes, a tradition has been evolving for decades.

Lake Kampeska itself has long been at the heart of Watertown’s identity—a place of gathering, recreation, and community connection dating back to the earliest days of settlement. The lake, whose name comes from a Dakota phrase meaning “Lake of the Shining Shells,” has served as a backdrop for celebrations, leisure, and shared experiences for generations.

Cookin’ on Kampeska is the modern expression of that legacy—but its roots go much deeper.

THE BEGINNING: KAMPESKA DAYS

Before Cookin’ on Kampeska, there was Kampeska Days—a community celebration built around everything people loved about summer at the lake. Kampeska Days captured the spirit of Watertown: time spent outdoors, family-friendly fun, and local pride centered around Lake Kampeska

These early events laid the foundation for what would become a signature summer tradition—bringing people together not just to celebrate the lake, but to celebrate each other.

THE EVOLUTION: KAMPESKA WING FLING

As the event grew, so did the desire to create a more defined identity around food and entertainment. This led to the next chapter: Wing Fling. Wing Fling introduced a stronger focus on food competitions, community participation, friendly rivalry and local flavor.

It marked a shift from a general summer celebration to something more experiential—where attendees didn’t just watch, they tasted, voted, and engaged. This phase helped solidify the idea that food could be the centerpiece of a signature Watertown event.

THE TRANSFORMAITON: COOKIN' ON KAMPESKA

In the mid-2000s, the event took on its modern identity as Cookin’ on Kampeska, growing into a multi-day festival that blends food, music, and family fun. Since its early years, the event has expanded significantly, evolving into a large-scale regional draw. What began as a friendly lake-based gathering quickly became something more: KCBS BBQ Competitions, live music and entertainment throughout the weekend, activities for all ages—from kids’ events to races and contests. Cookin' on Kampeska is a celebration of local businesses, organizations, and volunteers.

The goal was clear: create a signature summer event for Watertown that highlights Lake Kampeska while enhancing quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Over the years, Cookin’ on Kampeska has welcomed thousands to the lake each July, becoming a tradition where memories are made—whether it’s watching the sunset over the water, sampling incredible food, or dancing to live music.

TODAY: A REIMAGINED EXPERIENCE

Today, Cookin’ on Kampeska continues to evolve. Recent years have brought a renewed vision—expanding beyond competitions to create a full-scale lakefront festival experience. The event now emphasizes live music across all three days, interactive cooking experiences and demonstrations, expanded family-friendly activities, and a vibrant, festival-style atmosphere.

While the format has shifted over time, the heart of the event remains unchanged: bringing people together for a fun, welcoming, and unforgettable weekend at the lake.

MORE THAN AN EVENT: A TRADITION

Cookin’ on Kampeska is more than just a weekend on the calendar. It’s a reflection of Watertown’s community spirit, a celebration of Lake Kampeska’s natural beauty, a tradition built by volunteers, businesses, and generations of attendees

From Kampeska Days… to Wing Fling… to Cookin’ on Kampeska…

Each chapter has built on the last—creating something bigger than any single event:
